Ever since I can remember I have been outdoors, from picnics as a child to having our bikes confiscated in an attempt to stop us building structures in hay barns. Travel has been an integral part of my life since being sent on educational cruises by my parents at the age of 10 and 11. Having seen the pyramids, Herculaneum and run around buying souvenirs in the bazar in Istanbul, I was fully aware of how big the world was and how much there was to explore and experience. It was a different time and the thought of children now days getting those opportunities is mind blowing. I had only a passing interest in photography, normally with a small compact camera, which documented my travels to various places interspersed with climbing trips in the UK.
Photography only became a serious interest when I quit teaching scuba diving, i really needed a reason to get back in the water and a series of compact cameras finally led to a DSLR set up with housing and strobes. Finally I could get pictures of fish faces instead of tails! Since I was still travelling the camera came out of the water and became an important part of my travel gear. I realised that since I more often than not travel alone the only way I could truely share my experiences was via photographs. Having the opportunity to share some of the remote places I have been with my friends and most of all with my young nephew and niece, hopefully will go some way to giving them the opportunities I had as a child. An ability to see the world as a place to be experienced and enjoyed, with a mass of different cultures, environments and truely amazing animals.
You will notice a preponderance of snow and ice in my galleries, I have developed a serious obsession with the polar and sub polar regions since a trip to Wapusk national park in Manitoba. Perhaps it is living in Queensland with the heat and humidity, where 2 weeks in the cold is a treat not to be missed or more likely that these are places on the edge of survival with a unique set of environments. i can think of nothing in my life that fills me with a greater sense of perspective than sitting in remote locations, watching the light change and hoping that something walks within the range of my telephoto. The experience is enough the photos are a bonus.
I hope that if I have succeeded you can look at the photos and transport yourself to places that you may never choose to visit. Perhaps it will inspire you to do so, not necessarily in the popular seasons, when in some locations you will be swamped with people, but in the quiet times where you stand a chance of being with a small group of like minded people and of being the only people experiencing that moment in time.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my site and I hope you enjoy.
